James Wittis Kindred Sr., 82, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, Nov. 8, 2020, after a lengthy illness.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Lucy Marie (Leffall) Kindred; his parents, Nathan and Ida (Gaines) Kindred; sisters, Phyllis Gardner and Ruby Lee Sanders; brothers, Marcellas Kindred, Alexander Kindred, Nathaniel (Gent) Kindred and R.D. Newton; several aunts, uncles, cousins and grandchildren.
Born on January 7, 1938, in Waxahachie, Texas, James received an engineering degree from Prairie View A&M University. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1960, and served his country for 10 years, being promoted to captain, and was stationed all over the world and in Washington, D.C. After his military service, James was hired as a systems engineer for IBM, serving for 23 years until his retirement in 1993. He did not leave the work force for good, as he served in various positions, working as a tax preparer and instructor for Jackson Hewitt Tax Service; teaching golf to youth through the First Tee organization in Memphis; serving as a substitute teacher in the Memphis City School System; working in technical support for CB Richard Ellis; and building and fixing computers.
James was a very active golfer, and also loved gardening and bowling, being a handyman, and spent quality time with his family, particularly his children and grandchildren.
Survivors include his sisters Ollie May Shields (Larry) of Pomona, Calif., Florine Ellis of Lakewood, Calif.; brother, Floyd Kindred of Duncanville, Texas; daughters, Degie Butler and Tabatha Kindred, both of Dallas, Texas; son, James Kindred Jr. (Polly) of Maryville, Tenn.; a niece he raised since the age of 11, Sherry Blaylock of Baltimore, Md.; a grandson he raised since he was three months old, Aundre Kindred (Rachel) of Benton Harbor, Mich.; sisters-in-law, Sallye Leffall of Brooklyn, N.Y.; Ethel Leffall of Washington, D.C.; Doris Batts of Dallas, Texas; Myrtis Leffall of Memphis, Tenn.; grandchildren, Jlliane, Claudia, Skylar, Ryan, Wesley, Madison, Alexandra, and Nate; several great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.
